Former Armstrong County United Way director charged with theft

A former director at the United Way of Armstrong County is charged with stealing more than $37,000 from the organization, the county’s district attorney said.

Heather Wolfe, 45, whose last known address was in Kittanning, is charged with theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception, and receiving stolen property, all of which are third degree felonies, District Attorney Scott Andreassi said. She could face up to seven years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines if convicted.

Authorities were able to determine that Wolfe, who was hired as the organization’s director in March 2015, “fraudulently took funds from the organization without authorization,” Andreassi said.

“Some of those funds were paid directly to her by check or by fraudulent overtime figures,” Wolfe was arraigned Friday afternoon and released on a $35,000 unsecured bond, court records show.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 before District Judge James Owen in Kittanning.

  1. Our local United Way chapters need to do better at vetting executive directors prior to hiring them. Armstrong hired an alleged thief, Heather Wolfe, and Butler has sustained large losses under the current one, Kierston Hobaugh.
