One Dies In 5 Car Pileup In Mercer County Involving An Ambulance

The Mercer County Coroner has confirmed that one person was killed Thursday in a multi-vehicle accident on Route 62 in East Lackawannock Township according to WKBN.

The accident happened about 7:20 a.m. on Route 62, near Bestwick Rd police report.

The accident involved at least five vehicles, including an ambulance according to a WFMJ Report.

A witness said a car went left of center into the path of an Elite EMS ambulance heading the opposite way. The witness said the ambulance swerved to avoid hitting the car, ended up on two wheels and then careened into the path of the other cars.

A victum was flown to an undisclosed hospital condition unknown, names of those involved was not released.

At that time for an unknown reason, a vehicle driven by 83-year-old Maynard Ackerman of New Wilmington traveled into the oncoming lane. His vehicle hit an ambulance almost head on and traveled back into the correct lane where it impacted a third vehicle. The ambulance then hit a fourth vehicle and fifth vehicle head on.

The driver of the fifth vehicle, 50 year old Charles Weekes of Jackson Center, was airlifted to Mercy Health in Youngstown where he died from his injuries. Ackerman and the ambulance driver had to be extricated and treated for injuries.
