One fisherman has died after falling through the ice at Moraine State Park’s Lake Arthur Monday morning. Moraine State Park Manager Dustin Drew told our newsroom, “There was a 911 call around 10 a.m. from another park visitor and the visitor was reporting that someone was through the ice and needed assistance.
So some of our staff along with the local fire departments and the county water rescue team went to that scene which was near the 528 boat launch on the eastern side of the park.”
The ice rescue efforts were eventually turned over to a local dive team who recovered a body shortly after 1 p.m. The man has been identified but the release of that information is pending notification of family. Drew would say that the man was around 70 years old from the Pittsburgh area and he had traveled to the park alone.
Drew gives credit to local emergency responders who he said did an “amazing job under harsh conditions” but rescue efforts were also helped by the bystander who made the call staying at the scene.
