PA LEGISLATOR’S WORK THROUGH SNOW STORM TO PASS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LEGISLATION

Before today’s snowstorm forced an early adjournment, the Senate approved a seven-bill package to improve protections for victims of domestic violence and their children.

One bill already passed the House and will be sent to the governor, bringing Tierne’s law closer to enactment and giving risk assessment tools to judges setting bail for accused abusers.

Among the other bills we approved was one to provide police protection to victims when a PFA is served on their abuser, and another to have defendants who are ordered to relinquish their firearms to surrender them to law enforcement or a gun dealer instead of a family member.

Last year alone, PA provided services to close to 90,000 victims of domestic violence, and many more are no doubt suffering in silence.
