The PA Turnpike has issued its first set of criminal charges for drivers who have unpaid tolls.

This is all part of a stepped-up enforcement program, which turnpike officials hope will help garner some of the more than $17 million in unpaid tolls floating around. Aside from criminal charges, PennDOT has also suspended the vehicle registrations of 83 motorists with unpaid tolls of more than $500 who commit new violations.

Last year, data showed over 1,500 motorists in Butler County owed more than $105,000 in outstanding tolls.
